AEK

The Birth of the Queen

On the 4th of April 1968 the basketball team AEK Athens was crowned the Queen of European basketball getting the cup of the cups. This match also set a world basketball record of 65,000 viewers.

It all started when AEK won the Greek cup;  automatically qualifying for the European cup of cups. She first played against the Spanish team , Kas Vitoria, which she lost 82-72, however she  won the revance 86-65. AEK then played against the Belgian team , Ruagial which  she also managed to beat in the semifinals. In the semi-fi nals she played against the Italian team Inis Vareze.  In Italy she lost 78-60. However at the revance in the Panathinaic Stadium 50,000 people went to watch the match (the Panathinaic Stadium is an open stadium) with AEK managing to win with a 20 points difference, qualifying for the European final.

65.000 people went to watch the European final,  AEK-v-Slavia, which they won 89-82, due to the amazing basket sills of Amerikano and Tsavas. It was the first time that a Greek team managed to get to the peak of European basketball.  The match was also described by the amazing Vasili Georgiou, whose description can be heard partially in the link bellow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcyYfuy1x_E .

However  the Queen managed to fall to the second division of basketball at 2010, ending for the time being its magnificent course.

I have no doubt the Queen will be reborn.

Australian Open. The Ultimate Grand Slam.

The tournament that maximizes one’s potential and where players not only have to ‘fight’ the opposing crowd but also have to adapt to Australia’s high temperatures. This year’s Australian Open was no different from the Australian Open of the previous years, yet someone could argue that it wasn’t the same without Rafael Nadal’s presence due to his knee injury (which caused him to withdraw from the tournament).

The highlight of the tournament again came out on top with the world number 1 in both men’s and women’s single matches; the unbeatable Serbian Novak Djokovic and Vicotria Azarenka.  Novak Djokovic put on another defense-to- offense clinic to wear down Andy Murray  6-7(2) 7-6(3) 6-3 6-2 and   win his third consecutive Australian Open men’s singles title. The Serbian became the first man since 1967 to win five straight titles . This was his sixth Grand Slam title and is of the four-time Melbourne champion.

After a 3 hour match versus Chinese Li Na in the women’s final, Victoria Azarenka managed to end her dramatic three-set win with 4-6,6-4,6-3 final score.  “But it was a great experience … I came here not to defend, I came here to win another title. Last year winning here,  was such a special moment , which I wanted to experience again’. Those feelings came pouring out on Saturday night at Rod Laver Arena, in heaving, gasping sobs – not of anger or frustration or sadness, but pure and unadulterated joy. Azarenka’s win meant she not only defended her title down Under, but also retained the No.1 ranking.

Beckham Signs for PSG

Manchester, Madrid, Los Angeles, and now Paris. Although David Beckham may be in the twilight of his career, Paris St-Germain will be more than content with their signing of him. Even at the ripe old age of thirty-seven, David Beckham still commands the world’s attention on and off the football pitch.

“I’m very lucky. I’m 37 years old and I got offered a lot of offers. More offers now then I’ve probably had in my career. I am very honored by that. I chose Paris because I see what the club is trying to do and which sort of players they’re attracting.”

This is a lucrative five-month contract but Beckham insists that his salary go towards funding charity. Despite recently announcing he was to permanently base his family in London, Beckham said he would always make a decision on his next move based on football reasons. PSG have spent more than 200 million pounds in the last eighteen-months and are managed by Carlo Ancelloti, who was in charge of AC Milan during Beckham’s spell at the club. They are also still in this seasons Champions League and will face Spanish side Valencia.

Although it may all seem inspiring to have a figure of David’s status in the squad, there have been recent concerns over his fitness. There is skepticism over what a man in his thirties can offer for a team competing in the annual European located Champions League.

There were many Los Angeles critics that Beckham failed to silence over his loan moves to Milan. They felt it was a matter of commitment that Beckham did not put much forethought into. But he sold them lots of shirts, and in merchandised terms, Beckham most definitely plays for himself.

The owner of PSG had nothing but good words to say about David Beckham. For them, it is a move worth every penny of their substantial investment. In fact, Beckham has attracted a huge market audience with his brand name in PSG. Looking at the shop window in front of PSG’s master stadium dubbed “Parc des Princes”, it should come of little surprise that the home and away shirt’s are marked with Beckham’s infamous 32 jersey number.

It would have been a tall order of Beckham to delay his journey to Paris, and it has already been a success for Paris’s number one side, who has received an influx of appreciatory remarks from their fan base in Paris.

Rafael Nadal’s success at Indian Wells  in 2013 erases all doubts about his knee injury. Nadal’s return to the final and victory of a prestigious hardcourt tournament, after he missed seven months of competition because of injury and illness, seems to have caught many by surprise.

In the semi-finals, Nadal didn't just defeat the 17-time Grand Slam champion, he cruised past him on a hard court, signalling two things: Rafa is back, and although his knee may be hurting, he's just fine. Pain is a part of the game, and so long as Nadal is content to stick it out in the spirit of winning titles, there is no more reason to doubt that he will keep going for the number one ranking.

After his great victory against Roger Federer in the semi’s Rafa had to face Juan Martin Del Potro, the ultimate challenge where he managed to win after a two-and-a-half hours match with the score of   4-6 6-3 6-4.

Del Potro had been bidding to beat Nadal for only the fourth time in 11 career meetings but fell short as the Spanish world number five-played near-perfect tennis in the latter stages.

"Rafa deserves to win," Del Potro told reporters. "He played unbelievable for like an hour there. The last hour of the match he didn't make errors. He played so solid and put me so far to the baseline, and made winners from then on.

The next test for Rafa will be on the Grand Slam stage, where the next one up, just happens to be his favorite: Rolland Garros.
