Living with Autism (ASD)
By Danae Othonaiou
“Autism now affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys”
http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Autism/Pages/Autismoverview.aspx
Autism is a wide-spectrum disorder and therefore affects each individual in a different way. No one person with Autism can have the same symptoms as another autistic person. Although mainly genetics determine a person as autistic, the environment also plays a crucial role on the extent of the disorder’s development and on the way it develops. The characteristics of Autism can be very distinguishing in a person’s character, which means that the individual most of the times will need to be provided with further support from specialized therapists. However, there is a possibility that those characteristics are only slightly interfering with an individual’s character so that it does not affect his/her everyday life to a great extent. This kind of Autism is called Asperger’s Syndrome and it involves highly functioning individuals who can lead their social life on their own with just the support of their relatives and friends. This syndrome is part of Autism’s wide spectrum.
There is not one treatment for Autism. The therapist shapes the medical intervention in a way so that a person’s quality of life will not be undermined. It will largely depend on the individual’s own needs, together with the environment he/she lives in. It is especially difficult to know where to look for treatments when a disorder is poorly defined and characterized. Although Autism is a universal disorder its secrets have not been unlocked yet.
When meeting an Autistic person; “Be alert for body language, withdrawal, agitation or other signs that tell you something is wrong”, try not to be preoccupied with how a person behaves. Autistic people usually find it hard to socialize and communicate with unfamiliar faces but that does not mean that they are not friendly when you get to know them better. But remember that they are fragile and can sometimes misinterpret your words. So try filtering your words carefully when you want to speak to them mainly avoiding: Idioms, puns, metaphors, and sarcasm.
There are many causes and organizations that a person can commit to in support of Autism. They are great and can be very helpful for them. However, the best thing in my opinion that each individual can do, is to behave in a correct manner towards them. Hide your prejudices and try to understand them, it is worth it!

There May Have Been Life On Mars After All…
One of NASA’s aims was to ensure whether Mars’ environment was ever ideal for life. Now finally they have an answer: yes.
Recently, through their rover ‘Curiosity’ located on Mars, they discovered traces of various substances which may in the past have enabled Martian life. A network of rivers was found to have once existed in various areas of the red planet, making microbial life possible, but not meaning that it necessarily existed.
Analysis of the soil showed the existence of clay minerals which are only known to be able to develop in water, therefore leading to the conclusion of water having existed on the planet. In addition, the soil of Mars is thought to be neutral or mildly alkaline, indicating an ideal environment for microbes to inhabit. It was recently discovered to consist clay minerals and other chemicals used by living organisms, including sulphur, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and carbon. However, this new and exciting event, that there may have once been ‘Martian microbes’, is not yet a fact as NASA’s scientists have only found elements which would have made an ideal habitat for such micro organisms, rather than actually finding microbial life itself.
Now NASA is moving onto the next step of searching for traces of actual ancient life on Mars.
“The $2.5bn car-sized rover touched down on Mars in August last year after an audacious landing that required it to be winched to the ground by a hovering spacecraft. The mission will last one Martian year, or 687 Earth days. One day on Mars is called a sol and lasts 1.027 Earth days.
"It's a remarkable achievement. We are starting to see results from MSL that already justify the mission," said John Bridges, a planetary scientist and member of the Mars Curiosity team at Leicester University.. ‘We'll take it one sol at a time.’”[1]
